An electric vehicle changes a household’s electricity use more than almost anything else people add to a home, and it is worth thinking through separately from a standard solar sizing conversation.
An EV charger is a large, new daytime load
A home EV charger draws a meaningful amount of power, often more than most other single appliances in the house combined, and for hours at a stretch rather than in short bursts. If you already have solar sized to your pre-EV bill, adding a car to the household without re-checking the sizing is a common and avoidable mistake — the existing system may simply not generate enough surplus to meaningfully offset the new load.
Timing matters more here than almost anywhere else in solar
Solar generates during daylight hours; most people plug in an EV to charge overnight, out of habit carried over from petrol-refuelling routines or simply because that is when the car is parked and free. Getting real benefit from solar-offset EV charging usually means shifting at least some charging to daytime hours when the car is at home and the sun is generating — a scheduling change, not just a hardware one.
Housing societies: the subsidy already covers this

The honest limit
Charging directly from solar, moment to moment, only works while the panels are actually producing more than the rest of the house is using at that instant — a genuinely sunny midday with the car plugged in, for example. Most home EV charging will still draw from the grid at some point; what solar does is reduce the net cost of running the car, not eliminate grid dependence for it entirely, and we would rather tell you that plainly than oversell a “charge your car for free” line that does not hold up in practice.

Questions we are asked
Does an existing solar system automatically support EV charging?
Not automatically — an EV charger is a significant additional daytime load, and an existing system sized to your pre-EV bill may not generate enough surplus to cover it. Tell us you are adding an EV before assuming your current system covers it.
Is EV charging included in the housing society subsidy?
Yes — the ₹18,000 per kW society subsidy for common facilities explicitly includes EV charging points, alongside lighting, lifts and pumps.
Can I charge an EV directly from solar without the grid?
Only while the sun is generating enough surplus at that moment, which will not always match when you actually want to charge. Most home EV charging still draws from the grid at some point, with solar offsetting the overall bill rather than powering every single charge directly.
