Commercial and industrial solar in Punjab
Businesses get no free units and no PM Surya Ghar subsidy. That sounds like bad news, but it means solar saves from the very first unit, and daytime use matches daytime generation.

What your business pays PSPCL now
Shops, offices, clinics, schools and similar premises are billed under Non-Residential Supply (NRS). Energy is charged from the first unit, with no free allowance:

Effective 01.04.2026 to 31.03.2027. Electricity duty of about 13% is added on top. Always check the figures against your own bill.
Industrial manufacturing units pay a Punjab Government subsidised energy charge of ₹5.835 per kVAh for FY 2026-27, with fixed-charge waivers for Small Power and Medium Supply connections.
Why solar suits business connections
- Every unit is charged. There is no free-units line, so every solar unit you use directly reduces the bill.
- Daytime use. Most businesses use power when the sun is up. Solar units used directly are worth the full tariff.
- Predictable cost. Tariffs change every year. A rooftop system fixes the cost of a large share of your power for 25 years.
What solar does not reduce: the fixed charges on your sanctioned load. Those stay the same.
Sizing a commercial system
Start from twelve months of bills, not one, because business use varies by season. The system is sized to your daytime consumption and capped at your sanctioned load or contract demand. Larger systems are designed after a site survey: roof layout, shading, structure and the route for cabling to the meter all change the design.
Payback
Payback depends on the tariff, how much of the generation you use on site, and the system price. Enter a business bill in the calculator and choose your connection type for a first estimate.

Do businesses get the PM Surya Ghar subsidy?
No. The subsidy is for homes and housing societies. Commercial and industrial connections pay the full system cost.
How big a system can a business install?
Up to the sanctioned load or contract demand of the connection. If your roof and use justify more, apply to PSPCL for load enhancement first.
Why does daytime use matter?
Solar generates during the day. A shop, school, clinic or factory that uses most of its power in daylight uses its solar units directly, which is the most valuable way to use them. Surplus exported to the grid is credited under net metering rules and is worth less.
Are there tax benefits?
Businesses can usually claim depreciation on solar assets, often at an accelerated rate. The current rate and how it applies to you is a question for your chartered accountant.
