Why a solar pump for a tubewell

Once it is installed, the sun runs the pump, so there is no diesel to buy, store or carry out to the field. The panels generate through the day, which is when most tubewell irrigation happens anyway.

You are also free of the agricultural feeder. PSPCL runs agricultural supply on a fixed schedule, while a solar pump runs from your own panels whenever the sun is up. And with few moving parts there is little to maintain: there is no engine to service and no diesel filter or oil to change.

What a solar pump system is

A solar water pumping system has three parts. There is the panel array, a pump controller that turns the panels’ DC output into what the pump needs, and the pump itself, which is submersible for a borewell or surface-mounted for an open well or canal. The right size depends on your tubewell’s depth and the flow you need, so we start from the rating of your current pump (diesel or electric) and the depth before recommending anything.

Where this applies

• Tubewell irrigation, replacing or backing up a diesel or electric tubewell pump. This is the most common job.
• Drip and sprinkler systems, which work on a steady, metered flow that suits a solar pump well.
• Water for livestock and the farmhouse, from a smaller system.

Check the subsidy before you count on a number

Agricultural solar pumps come under a different scheme from the rest of this site, and three separate things are easy to mix up.

1. PM Surya Ghar is for grid-connected rooftop solar on a home or business roof. It is covered everywhere else on this site and does not apply to a standalone farm pump.
2. PM-KUSUM (Component B) is the scheme for standalone solar water pumps, with a central government subsidy plus a Punjab state top-up, run through PEDA. The subsidy share, and whether applications are open, changes between rounds. We have seen it reported differently within the same year, so we don’t quote a fixed percentage. Ask us or PEDA before you budget around a number.
3. Punjab’s free agricultural power is a separate matter again, and it is where a simple sizing exercise can go wrong. If your tubewell already runs on a free agricultural connection, solar saves you diesel or gives you a more reliable supply. There is no electricity bill to cut, because that power was already free.

Installation and service
