Why a solar pump for a tubewell

• No diesel cost. Once installed, the sun runs the pump — no fuel to buy, store or transport to the field.
• Runs when you irrigate. Solar generates through the day, which is when most tubewell irrigation happens anyway.
• Not dependent on the agricultural feeder. Punjab’s agricultural power supply runs on a fixed schedule set by PSPCL. A solar pump draws from your own panels, not that schedule.
• Low moving parts, low maintenance. No engine to service, no diesel filter, no oil changes.

What a solar pump system is

A solar water pumping system has three parts: a solar panel array, a pump controller that converts the panels’ DC output into what the pump needs, and the pump itself — submersible for a borewell, or surface-mounted for an open well or canal. Sizing depends on your tubewell’s depth and the flow rate you need, not a single fixed spec, so we start from your current pump’s rating (diesel or electric) and your depth before recommending a size.

Where this applies

• Tubewell irrigation — the most common case, replacing or supplementing a diesel or electric tubewell pump.
• Drip and sprinkler systems — solar pumps pair well with drip irrigation, since both are about steady, metered flow rather than a single large burst.
• Livestock and farmhouse water supply — smaller systems for drinking water and general farm use.

The subsidy position — read this before assuming a number

Agricultural solar pumps are covered by a different scheme from the rest of this site. Three separate things are easy to confuse:

1. PM Surya Ghar — for grid-connected rooftop solar on a home or business roof. Covered everywhere else on this site. Does not apply to a standalone farm pump.
2. PM-KUSUM (Component B) — the actual scheme for standalone solar water pumps, with a central government subsidy plus a Punjab state top-up, administered through PEDA. The exact subsidy share and whether applications are currently open changes between rounds. We do not quote a fixed percentage here because we have seen it reported inconsistently even in the same year — ask us or check directly with PEDA before budgeting around a number.
3. Punjab’s free agricultural power — a separate matter again, and one reason a naive solar sizing exercise can go wrong: if your tubewell already runs on a free agricultural connection, the saving from solar is on diesel or on reliability, not on an electricity bill that was already free.

Installation and service
