Off-grid solar systems
Solar with batteries and no connection to PSPCL. It is for sites where the grid is unreliable or missing altogether: farmhouses, tube-well rooms, remote buildings and homes that want to stop depending on supply cuts.

How an off-grid system works
Panels charge a battery bank through a charge controller, and an inverter turns the battery power into normal 230 V AC for your loads. With no connection to PSPCL, nothing is exported and there is no electricity bill for the circuits the system runs. That also means it has to be sized to make and store all the energy you use.

Sizing: energy first, then storage
- List the loads and the hours each one runs per day, then multiply watts by hours to get units (kWh).
- Size the panels to make that many units on a typical day, with some margin for winter and cloudy spells.
- Size the batteries for the hours without sun, without draining them too deeply, because deep discharge shortens battery life.
The off-grid solar calculator does these three steps for the appliances you choose, and shows the roof area and a price range.
Off-grid systems most often go wrong at this stage, with panels sized for summer and batteries too small for a winter evening. Size the system for the worst month of the year.
Upkeep
Keep the panels clean, especially in dusty months, and check the batteries. Tubular batteries need their water topped up, and the float indicators on UTL tubular batteries show when. Plan for a battery replacement during the life of the panels.
Questions we are asked
What size of off-grid system do I need?
Add up what you want to run and for how many hours, in units (kWh) per day. The panels have to make that much energy on a typical day, and the batteries have to hold enough for the hours without sun. UTL rates its 3 kW off-grid kit at about 12 units a day. Tell us your loads and we will size both.
Can an off-grid system run an air conditioner?
A larger system can, but air conditioners draw a lot of power for long periods and need a big battery bank to run after dark. We will tell you whether it is practical for your site.
Is there a subsidy for off-grid rooftop solar?
Not under PM Surya Ghar, which covers grid-connected systems. Standalone solar water pumps on farms come under a different scheme, PM-KUSUM. See our solar pumps page.
