Off-grid solar systems

Solar with batteries and no connection to PSPCL. For sites where the grid is unreliable or absent: farmhouses, tube-well rooms, remote buildings and homes that want independence from supply cuts.

How an off-grid system works

Panels charge a battery bank through a charge controller. An inverter turns the battery power into normal 230 V AC for your loads. There is no connection to PSPCL, so nothing is exported and there is no electricity bill for the circuits it runs. The system has to be sized to make and store all the energy you use.

Two of our Google reviewers in Mohali describe their off-grid systems, a 3 kW and a 5 kW:

“After thoroughly researching solar solutions in the Tricity area, I decided on a 5KW off-grid connection in Mohali, and I’m extremely satisfied with my choice.”

Sizing: energy first, then storage

  1. List the loads and the hours each runs per day. Multiply watts by hours to get units (kWh).
  2. Size the panels to make that many units on a typical day, with margin for winter and cloudy spells.
  3. Size the batteries for the hours without sun, without draining them too deep. Deep discharge shortens battery life.

This is where off-grid systems go wrong most often: panels sized for summer and batteries too small for a winter evening. Size for the worst month, not the best.

Upkeep

Keep the panels clean, especially in dusty months, and check the batteries. Tubular batteries need their water level topped up; the float indicators on UTL tubular batteries show when. Plan for battery replacement during the life of the panels.

Questions we are asked

What size of off-grid system do I need?

Add up what you want to run and for how many hours, in units (kWh) per day. The panels must make that energy on a typical day, and the batteries must hold enough for the hours without sun. UTL rates its 3 kW off-grid kit at about 12 units a day. Tell us your loads and we size both.

Can an off-grid system run an air conditioner?

A larger system can, but air conditioners draw a lot of power for long periods and need a big battery bank to run after dark. We will tell you honestly whether it is practical for your site.

Is there a subsidy for off-grid rooftop solar?

Not under PM Surya Ghar, which covers grid-connected systems. For standalone solar water pumps on farms, a different scheme, PM-KUSUM, applies instead — see our solar pumps page.
