Which solar panel technology is best now
For a new home or business rooftop in Punjab in 2026, the answer is usually an N-type TOPCon panel, half-cut and bifacial, and DCR if you are claiming the subsidy. Here is why, and when something else is the better buy.

The short answer
Choose N-type TOPCon, which has the highest efficiency of the common types and copes best with heat. Most TOPCon panels are now half-cut and bifacial as well. If you are claiming the subsidy, the panels must also be DCR and on the ALMM list.
The technologies, side by side

The last two are not rival technologies. A single panel can be TOPCon, half-cut and bifacial all at once, and many are.
The efficiency gap, on one brand’s panels
Comparing within one brand keeps the test fair. On UTL’s own panels:
Across brands the TOPCon figures are close together: we checked nine, from 22.3% to 23.69%, on our TOPCon page. Once you have chosen TOPCon, the brand makes less difference than the warranty, DCR status and installation.
When the answer is different
- A solar water pump or a small off-grid system with plenty of space: mono PERC can do the job for less. See solar pumps and off-grid systems.
- A business, which the home subsidy does not cover: non-DCR panels are cheaper for the same output. See DCR and non-DCR panels.
- A flat, dark roof with no room for a raised frame: bifacial adds little, so do not pay extra for it alone. See bifacial panels.

What is the best solar panel technology in 2026?
For most new rooftops, N-type TOPCon. It lists the highest efficiency of the common technologies, 21.3% to 23.3% on UTL's panels and up to about 23.7% across the brands we checked, and it loses less output in heat. Half-cut and bifacial are features most TOPCon panels now include.
Are polycrystalline panels still worth buying?
Rarely, for a rooftop. Mono panels have replaced them almost everywhere, because they make more power from the same space.
Does the technology affect the subsidy?
No. The PM Surya Ghar subsidy needs DCR panels on the ALMM list, whatever the technology. Check DCR first, then choose the technology.
