Solar installation and handover checklist
A checklist to keep beside you from the site survey to the day the subsidy arrives: what should happen at each stage, what to look at on the roof, and the papers to collect before the job is signed off.
Tick each line as it happens. Anything you cannot tick is worth a question before you move on.
Before installation
- A site survey has checked the roof’s direction, shade through the day, strength, and the cable route to your meter board.
- The size fits your sanctioned load, or the load increase has been approved by PSPCL.
- For the subsidy: your portal application is in and PSPCL’s feasibility approval has arrived.
- The vendor is registered on the PM Surya Ghar portal.
- You have the quote in writing, itemised, with the panel and inverter make and model.
- The panels being delivered match the quote: make, model, wattage and DCR status on the label.
- You know where the inverter and the distribution boxes will go.
On installation day
- The mounting structure is fixed firmly and the roof is sealed at every fixing.
- Panels sit in the planned layout with room to reach them for cleaning.
- No panel is shaded by a tank, a parapet or the structure itself in the middle of the day.
- DC cables are in conduit or tray, clipped, and not lying on the roof surface.
- The DC distribution box has an isolator and surge protection.
- The AC distribution box has a breaker and surge protection.
- Earthing pits are dug and connected, the number agreed in the quote.
- A lightning arrester is fitted where agreed.
- The inverter is in a shaded, ventilated spot, out of the rain.
- The site is cleaned up and packaging taken away.
Testing and the net meter
- The installer shows you the inverter starting and making power.
- The monitoring app or display is set up, and you can see today’s units.
- The plant details, photos and serial numbers are submitted on the portal.
- The net meter application is filed.
- PSPCL fits the bi-directional net meter and inspects the system.
- The portal issues the commissioning certificate.
- Your bank details are submitted for the subsidy.
Papers to collect at handover
- The invoice.
- The manufacturer’s warranty cards for the panels, inverter and any battery.
- The panel and inverter datasheets.
- A list of the panel and inverter serial numbers.
- The commissioning certificate.
- The installer’s service number, and who to call for a warranty claim.
- A simple drawing of the layout and where the isolators are.
In the first month
- Note the inverter total and the net meter’s import and export on the same date each week.
- Check the units against the estimate in your quote, allowing for the weather.
- Watch the first bill: it should show the import and export readings.
- The subsidy arrives in your bank account, typically 30 to 45 days after the inspection.
Keep these together
Put the papers from points 25 to 31 in one folder, with a photo of each on your phone. Warranty claims, a future sale of the house and any subsidy query all need them. How to read your solar meter and bill explains the readings in points 32 to 34, and the maintenance guide covers what comes after.
Questions we are asked
How long does a rooftop solar installation take?
The fitting itself is usually done in a day or two for a home system. The net meter and the inspection depend on PSPCL's schedule, which is outside the installer's control.
Can the system run before the net meter is fitted?
An on-grid system should not export to the grid before PSPCL fits the net meter and inspects it. Ask your installer how the system is kept from exporting until then.
What documents should I get after installation?
The invoice, the manufacturer's warranty cards, the panel and inverter datasheets, a list of the panel and inverter serial numbers, the commissioning certificate, and the login for the inverter's monitoring app if it has one.
Work out your own figures
- Solar quote comparison Put up to three quotes side by side: price per kW, subsidy and what each leaves out.
- Solar calculator Size, subsidy, cost and payback from your PSPCL bill.
Figures on subsidies, tariffs and schemes are as published by the government at the dates shown and can change. Prices and generation figures are estimates for planning, not a quotation or a guarantee.
