50-point solar quote checklist
Two quotes for the same size can describe very different systems. Use this list to check what each quote actually includes, and to ask about everything it leaves out, before you compare prices.
Tick each point the quote answers in writing. Anything left blank is a question to ask before you sign. The same list, as a tool that compares up to three quotes, is the solar quote comparison.
The system
- The system size in kW, and the type: on-grid, hybrid or off-grid.
- The units it is expected to make in a year or a month, and what that figure assumes.
- Whether the size fits your sanctioned load, and if not, who applies to PSPCL for the increase.
- Which part of the roof the panels go on, and the area they use.
- Which direction the panels face, and at what tilt.
- Whether the price includes GST.
Panels
- The make and the model number.
- The wattage of each panel and how many panels there are.
- Whether the panels are DCR, stated in writing.
- Whether the model is on the government’s ALMM list, which the subsidy needs.
- The technology: mono PERC, TOPCon, bifacial.
- The datasheet, attached.
- The manufacturer’s product warranty, in years.
- The manufacturer’s power output warranty, in years and as a percentage of rated power.
Inverter
- The make and the model number.
- The rating in kW, and single or three phase to match your connection.
- The type: on-grid, hybrid, or an off-grid PCU.
- How you see what it makes: an app, Wi-Fi monitoring or a display.
- The manufacturer’s warranty, in years.
- Where it will be mounted: shaded, ventilated and out of the rain.
- The datasheet, attached.
Battery, for hybrid and off-grid systems
- The type: lithium or tubular.
- The capacity in kWh, or in Ah with the voltage.
- How much of it is planned to be used each day.
- The manufacturer’s warranty, and the cycle rating for a lithium battery.
- Which circuits it keeps running during a power cut.
Mounting structure
- The material and its finish, for example hot-dip galvanised steel.
- Its height above the roof, and room to reach the panels for cleaning.
- How it is fixed to the roof, and how the roof is kept waterproof at each fixing.
- The wind load it is designed for.
- Who puts it right if the roof leaks at a fixing.
Electrical work and protection
- The DC cable size and type.
- The AC cable size, and its route to your meter board.
- A DC distribution box with an isolator and surge protection.
- An AC distribution box with a breaker and surge protection.
- How many earthing pits, and what each one serves.
- A lightning arrester.
- Conduit or cable tray along the cable run.
Paperwork and subsidy
- That the vendor is registered on the PM Surya Ghar portal.
- Who files the portal application, and when.
- That nothing is installed before PSPCL’s feasibility approval.
- Who applies for the net meter and follows up the inspection.
- Who pays for the net meter and any PSPCL charges.
- That the subsidy is paid into your own account, and is not deducted in the quote.
Price and payment
- An itemised price, not a single figure.
- The payment schedule: advance, on delivery, on commissioning.
- What is excluded: civil work, extra cable, a raised structure, transport.
Service and handover
- Who to call for service, and how soon they come.
- Any free service visits or cleaning, in writing.
- The papers you receive at handover: invoice, warranty cards, datasheets and serial numbers.
How to use the answers
Price per kW is the fairest single figure for comparing quotes, but only once the answers above match. A lower price with non-DCR panels loses the subsidy. A lighter structure, thinner cable or fewer earthing pits cost less on the day and can cost more later. When two quotes differ by a lot, the gap is usually in points 7 to 38.
For what each item means and why it matters, see the home solar buying guide, the panel buying guide and the inverter buying guide.
Questions we are asked
What should a solar quotation include?
The size and type, the panel and inverter make and model with their datasheets and warranties, whether the panels are DCR, the structure, cables and protection, the paperwork for the net meter and subsidy, an itemised price with the payment schedule, and what happens at handover and for service.
Why is one solar quote so much cheaper than another?
Usually because it is not quoting the same thing: non-DCR panels, a lighter structure, thinner cable, fewer earthing pits, or no paperwork. Compare item by item before comparing the total.
Should the quote deduct the subsidy?
No. The PM Surya Ghar subsidy is paid into your own bank account after the DISCOM inspection, so a correct quote shows the full price and, separately, the subsidy you can expect.
Work out your own figures
- Solar quote comparison Put up to three quotes side by side: price per kW, subsidy and what each leaves out.
- Solar calculator Size, subsidy, cost and payback from your PSPCL bill.
- Roof capacity calculator How many kW your roof takes, the panels, the units and the price.
Figures on subsidies, tariffs and schemes are as published by the government at the dates shown and can change. Prices and generation figures are estimates for planning, not a quotation or a guarantee.
